Top 10 Interesting Fact About The Indian Constitution:
There are two versions of the Constitution. One’s written in English and the other, in Hindi.
Each Assembly member signed both the versions. Moreover, the English version has 117,370 words.
The Constitution was handwritten- Neither versions were printed or typed. It was written by Prem Behari Narain Raizada.
The Indian Constitution is the longest handwritten constitution in the World.
The Indian Constitution is the world’ Longest Constitution- it has a Preamble, 448 Articles, 25 Parts, 12 Schedules, 5 Appendices and 115 Amendments.
And it was published in Dehradun. And the original copies are stored in the Library of Parliament of India.
It took nearly 3 years to write the Constitution. The final draft was ready on 26th November 1949.
The Assembly met on 9th Dec 1946 and it took 2 years, 11 months and 18 days to come up the final draft.
All artwork in the Constitution was made by artists from Shantiniketan.
Each page of the constitution featured unique artwork by artists such as Nandalal Bose and Beohar Rammohar Singh.
Constitutions of other countries influenced The Indian Constitution.
Among them were France, USSR and Japan.
From France, the ideals of “Liberty, Equality and Fraternity” was borrowed. The concept of 5 year plans were influenced by the USSR Constitution. The laws that govern our court and the idea of “procedure established by law” was borrowed from the Japanese Constitution.
When the first draft was prepared, it was discussed and over 2000 amendments were made.
Around 280 members signed the Constitution among them 15 were women.
It was signed at the Constitution Hall which is now known as the Central Hall of Parliament which is situated in New Delhi.
The Constitution was enforced on 26th January 1950.
This day was decided upon to celebrate Purna Swaraj or complete independence.
The Constitution has only been amended 94 times till date.
In its 62 years, the Constitution of India has stood strong against the test of time.
